Under his guidance, indie games received a notable spotlight, aligning with his personal enthusiasm for these unique and often groundbreaking projects.
A quick glance at his Twitter reveals just how committed he is to promoting indie titles, with games like Red Candle’s Nine Sols featuring prominently in his bio. Reflecting his deep-rooted passion, Yoshida once shared on the PlayStation Blog that, during events such as E3, he would always gravitate towards the indie game sections. For him, heading the indies initiative represented a “dream job.”
Yoshida’s tenure at PlayStation is filled with highlights. One particular moment that holds a special place in his heart is the recognition of the indie game Journey. He reminisces about the time Journey won the Game of the Year Award, a significant achievement considering its competition against bigger AAA titles. Yoshida described Journey as a small, digital-only game available through PlayStation Network, which players could complete in a mere few hours. Despite its size, Journey’s profound impact was undeniable. He fondly recalled a touching story shared by the game’s creator, Jenova Chen, about a girl who found solace and healing in the game after losing her father. The room, filled with industry professionals, was moved, showcasing the extraordinary impact games can have.
