Okay, so here it goes. I stumbled onto Dropout — yep, the ex-College Humor bunch — and their runaway hit, Game Changer. If you haven’t seen it, imagine comedians spinning into games that range from “huh?” to “that-just-happened!” Honestly, it’s something. Anyway, a thought hit me: Could Game Changer morph into an actual video game? And guess what? Maybe!
Chatting with Sam Reich, the Dropout head honcho, was a trip. We talked about Game Changer’s crafty games, how they test them out, and tweak them — like a chaotic science experiment. This chat, by the way, will be up later, stay tuned. But, back to my burning question: Is a game version in the cards?
“Well, yeah,” Sam said over Zoom (it’s bizarre how normal Zoom feels now, right?). He mused about maybe rolling out a game themed around Dimension 20, another fan-favorite D&D-style show they run, or Game Changer itself.
He said something like, “Look, if we jump into this, it’s gotta scream ‘Dropout.’ No outsourcing the soul of it, right? It’s about finding time and heart to make sure it doesn’t just blend in — it should feel special.” Making sense, if you think about it.
Then the reality check dropped: Games cost $$$ and time. Minds blown. I poked Sam a bit more — is this gaming gig actually on the table? He swore they’ve got some ideas brewing.
Sam riffed on how they’ve been tinkering with smaller web games in Game Changer. Kind of like testing the waters, seeing if they can speak “video game” fluently.
He seemed pretty psyched might I add, almost like Game Changer: The Game could surprise us sometime down the line. “Yep, it’s happening. Just a matter of what that looks like,” he threw in.
And oh, for those keeping tabs, Game Changer’s season 7 wraps up exclusively on Dropout, August 11.
