Sure, here goes nothing.

So, here’s the thing: Square Enix has been tossing out these new Final Fantasy 9 artworks all over social media since June 30. It’s like they’re teasing us on purpose. Fans are buzzing everywhere, thinking, “Is a remake on the way?” These artworks, by the way, show some pretty iconic stuff from FF9 – like the Iifa Tree and Tantalus’ theater stage. Classic, right?
Anyway, the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9 is just around the corner — July 7, to be exact. Fun fact (or not, if you’re not into video games): that’s the same date the game originally hit shelves in Japan back in 2000 for the PlayStation. It got to North America a bit later, in November. Modern versions are out there now, too, like on PS4 and Switch.
And, wow, remember that whole Nvidia GeForce Now leak back in 2021? It kind of hinted at a potential FF9 remake, among other things. I mean, apparently, it also guessed things like “Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles” and Sony sneaking their own stuff onto PC. Wild times.
So maybe you’re wondering, has Square Enix confirmed anything yet? Nope. But people are hopeful. Recently, Push Square mentioned that the Final Fantasy social pages posted not one, not two, but three new art pieces of FF9. The first two showed up on June 30, with another one popping up on July 1. There’s this artist, Yuya Ishihata, who shared a sick calendar showing the main gang on Tantalus’ main theater stage. Another June 30 artwork from Toshiyuki Itahana portrayed Kuja staring at the Iifa Tree roots — super dramatic, if you ask me.
And then, on July 1, Itahana did it again with the FF9 crew standing atop the Iifa Tree roots, under two moons. I’m not saying it’s a sign, but who knows?
Honestly, FF9 has this unforgettable roster, like Zidane and Vivi, making its mark on long-time fans. What happens on July 7? Your guess is as good as mine. Could there be an announcement? Fingers crossed!
Oh, and random info: Apparently, Square almost bit the dust after the franchise creator left back in the early 2000s, according to Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer. Makes you wonder, right?
Anyway, until Square drops the news, we all just gotta play the waiting game.
