So, you know how life sometimes just throws these curveballs, like a friend deciding outta nowhere to move the release date for a game you’ve been waiting for? Yeah, that’s kinda what happened with Subnautica 2. Krafton, the big boss in charge over at the Korean games firm, decided to push it back to 2026. Why? Good question.
Some fancy folks at Bloomberg were saying Krafton might be doing this to dodge a $250 million bonus payout to the dev team. But Krafton? Oh, they’re like, “Nah, it’s not about that money stuff.” Who knows, right? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I mean, the company insists it’s got zilch to do with contracts or cash.
Anyway — wait, no — let’s not run off on that tangent just yet. Another twist in this story: they switched up the crew managing this whole shebang. Enter Steve Papoutsis, the veteran. Seems like this guy’s the new skipper steering the ship over at Unknown Worlds, where they brew up the Subnautica magic.
During some of those playtests — you know, when folks get to poke around in the game before it’s finished — the feedback came rolling in. Some loved it but also whispered, “Hey, maybe tweak this or that a bit?” (Why does that always happen, though? You think you’ve nailed it, and bam, more tweaks.) Krafton listened to the community’s two cents and thought, “Hmm, maybe we need some more time.” So, more time it is, and boom, next thing you know, Early Access isn’t happening until 2026.
So here we are, waiting, wondering, but with a glimmer of hope for when Subnautica 2 finally graces us with its presence. Come 2026, I guess we’ll see if all those changes were worth this wild rollercoaster.
