Well, here we go again with another game that’s likely biting the dust. This time, it’s the mysterious Project G.G. from PlatinumGames. You might have remembered it being touted as something akin to Ultra Man, but honestly, not much was ever unveiled to the public.
So, whatever happened to Project G.G.? If it’s slipped your mind, that’s understandable. It was first announced back in 2020, but details about it have been sparse. Things took a turn when Hideki Kamiya, who was not just the director but also one of the studio’s co-founders, decided to leave PlatinumGames at the tail end of 2023. Naturally, his departure raised eyebrows and sparked doubts about the future of this project. If you hop over to PlatinumGames’ list of works on their site, you’ll see only ten titles featured. Among them are fan-favorites like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and even the newer buzz around Ninja Gaiden 4.
Now, for those of you willing to dive into the past using tools like the Wayback Machine, you’ll find that there were originally 22 games on that list. Some of those were licensed gems like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra. Not to mention games crafted solely by them, such as Madworld and the much-criticized Babylon’s Fall. Interestingly, all these titles have maintained their individual pages even though they’ve vanished from the main list (shout out to Eurogamer for that observation). However, Project G.G. is conspicuously absent, its URL now just redirects to the PlatinumGames homepage, leaving no trace behind.
This pretty much says the project has been shelved, and given Kamiya’s absence for over a year now, it’s not shocking. Although it’s somewhat hazy what every developer at PlatinumGames has been up to lately, especially with a noticeable staff shift occurring recently, the announcement of a new Ninja Gaiden game does at least offer a glimmer of hope for their future operations.
