The CES event is shaping up to unveil a host of innovative tech, with a brand-new HDMI standard set to take the spotlight. This will mark the evolution from the current HDMI 2.1 ports. According to a report from ComputerBase, the HDMI Licensing Administrator plans to introduce a “breakthrough” technology at the event. Although they haven’t officially named the upcoming version, it’s almost certain we’ll be meeting HDMI 2.2, which promises to deliver higher bandwidth, enhanced resolution support, and improved refresh rates.

While the specifics of what HDMI 2.2 will bring to the table remain under wraps, the expectation is that it will surpass current capabilities. The HDMI 2.1 standard already supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth and resolutions reaching 10,240 × 4,320 pixels, so the new iteration is expected to go beyond these figures.

So far, no GPU manufacturers have confirmed plans to integrate HDMI 2.2 into their next-generation GPUs.
