Studio Behind ‘Blade & Sorcery’ Announces Development of New “Highly Moddable” VR Game

Blade & Sorcery, the much-loved VR combat simulator that became a sensation in the virtual reality gaming community, reached a significant milestone with its full release in June 2024. Although this marks the end of its development phase, Warpfrog, the creative force behind the game, isn’t slowing down. They’ve announced that they’re already diving into their next project, promising it to be just as mod-friendly as their iconic physics-based combat title.

While details about this upcoming game are still being kept under wraps, Warpfrog informed Road to VR that it will be another VR experience featuring the signature elements fans have come to love in their games. These include the lifelike physics-based interactions and a strong focus on simulation. Importantly, they’ve assured fans that, much like Blade & Sorcery, the new game will heavily support modding. This means players can expect the same level of customization, where they can manually tweak the game or use tools like Nexus Mod Manager to integrate user-generated content, enhancing everything from combat effects to entire new maps and weapons.

In a conversation with Meta in October, Warpfrog shared that they’re implementing an entirely new framework for this next venture. This decision follows the challenges they faced while maximizing the old framework during the prolonged early access period of Blade & Sorcery. They explained, “We needed to clean up some spaghetti code and scale up. So, we’ve gone back to the drawing board to build something fresh on a new engine. Our goal is to create a framework designed specifically for our team, marking the first time we’re developing a game from start to finish with a full crew.”

Expectations for Warpfrog’s new project are understandably high. What began as a solo endeavor by developer ‘KospY’ has now evolved into a thriving team of nearly 30 people. This growth has paved the way for expansions and enhancements that were once unimaginable.

The significant 1.0 update rolled out in June was a game-changer for Blade & Sorcery. It introduced the ‘Crystal Hunt’ mode, transforming the title from just a physical combat sandbox into a fully-fledged adventure game. Players can now enjoy upgrade systems, immersive narratives, and explore a far more expansive and interconnected world.

Warpfrog hinted at their exciting future plans in a Steam news update: “This is just the beginning… With five years of experience under our belts, we’re thrilled to unveil what we have in store next. Your continued support has fueled us to aim higher and develop even more ambitious and captivating games.” It’s clear that Warpfrog is gearing up to take the VR gaming world by storm once again, and fans are eagerly waiting to see what’s next on their horizon.
