Oh man, this game, Keeper’s Toll. Ever dived into a roguelite set in some kind of twisted fantasy world? I’m talking real dark, like the type where shadows have shadows—crazy, right? You get to wander through places that sound straight out of a nightmare, like Linden Forest. I swear, that forest used to be alive, you know, all green and peaceful, but now it’s just a wreck. Ruins everywhere. Then there’s the Usvit Depths, which used to be the digs for servants—now it’s all slime and lurking doom. Get ready to freak out when you pass through there. Usvit Castle? Once the crown jewel, now it’s a demonic death trap. And the last one? End of Time. Like, what’s that? A place where everything goes topsy-turvy.
So, you got choices when it comes to characters: Shadow Monk, Pyromancer, Blood Maiden, and a bunch of others, six in total. And they all have their quirks and skills. Get this — the Shadow Monk is this vengeance-driven melee fiend. Can’t quite figure why he’s so mad, but that’s how it rolls. The Pyromancer, though, a magic whiz whose skin is practically tattooed with past mistakes, struggling with speed but sends firestorms every which way. Oh, and the Blood Maiden, she’s weirdly alluring. Faster and more defense than Pyromancer, casting area spells like she’s painting chaos.
The game’s controls? Dead easy, really. Move around with your left stick or D-Pad, while your character auto-hacks and slashes. Hit Square and boom, healing with a health flask. Just don’t overdo it, ’cause it’s limited. Crush enemies, level up, rinse, repeat. Oh, and perks like Chilling Blow, which might freeze enemies in place, come in handy when you need some crowd control.
Gold anyone? Yeah, enemies drop it, and you can spend it on becoming a little more OP. Find merchants strolling about, selling health boosts or damage reflect gear. Remember the Shield of Thorns? It legit hits back harder than a cornered raccoon. Also, Tomes of Knowledge — grab those for skill boosts. Stuff like making you sprint like the wind or boosting your attack damage when you’re nearly at death’s door. Pretty sick!
Now, trophies are a thing if you’re into that. A ton of them! You try not getting clobbered for a full five minutes, and BAM, shiny trophy. Collecting souls, bagging boss kills, it’s all on the table for the avid collector. And Cross-Buy? Sweet. Buy once, get it onto both your PS4 and PS5. Two lists of trophies for the price of one.
Overall, Keeper’s Toll is full of chaos and decision-making — who knew an eerie fantasy land could do that? Might sound odd, but dying in a roguelite never felt so satisfying.
Hey, I should mention, this review comes from a PS5 copy provided by eastasiasoft, so shout-out to them for letting me dive headfirst into this whirlwind. Keep your eyes open—figuratively, of course—and maybe you’ll make it out unscathed. Or not. But that’s part of the fun, right?
