During a community tour in France earlier this month, Tom Cannon, the executive producer of 2XKO, announced the new feature. Initially hesitant, Cannon decided to share the information with a casual, “Yeah, why not,” as he unveiled the plans.
Explaining the motivation behind this move, Cannon acknowledged the logistical challenges faced by tournament organizers. “Organizing several setups during a tournament can be cumbersome. Our goal is to make this process seamless, allowing tournaments to run without an internet connection and eliminating the need to unlock champions painstakingly.”
He continued, “We’re making it possible for you to enjoy the game offline. While you won’t have access to all content like skins, every champion will be available for competitive play. This is our key offering.”
Support for grassroots tournaments remains a priority for 2XKO. Cannon emphasized the importance of feedback from these events to help refine and enhance future features.
For those who specialize in hosting competitive fighting game events, this is a major breakthrough. An online-exclusive game often presents obstacles, such as ensuring robust internet connectivity and potentially incurring hefty internet usage fees. Removing the requirement to manually unlock characters across numerous 2XKO accounts is a game-changer, saving time and effort for event organizers.
However, there are lingering questions about compatibility with Riot Games’ Vanguard Anti-Cheat system, which inherently requires an internet connection. Vanguard’s integration poses potential issues, particularly if the offline mode operates through the Riot Games launcher as current Alpha Lab tests do. Clarification on this aspect is pending, as Riot Games has not yet responded to inquiries.
