Whoa, so here we are, with just about a week to go until Nintendo’s big reveal. The Switch 2 — they keep tossing out these little bits of info like we’re piecing together some mystery game. Nintendo’s doing this thing through the Nintendo Today app, and they threw out something about new features that’ll make their N64 games better and, weirdly, more nostalgic.
Okay, first off — you can rewind gameplay. No kidding! You know those times when you miss a jump in a platformer? Or like me, somehow manage to hurl yourself off the track in Mario Kart 64? Major facepalm moments. Well, now you can just rewind. Like, was this a thing they thought of because they know we’re all terrible at Mario Kart? Maybe. Or maybe it’s just for the giggles.
Oh, and get this: CRT filters! What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s just a fancy way to throw scan-lines onto your N64 games. Like, hello 1998! You can make Ocarina of Time look all old-school and grainy, which is kinda awesome and makes me wonder why I crave this retro fuzziness.
Now, here’s the real kicker — these are exclusive to the Switch 2, but the good old original Switch isn’t left out completely! Both these lovely consoles will get a feature allowing you to remap controls for those beloved N64 games. You want to confuse yourself with new button layouts? Knock yourself out. Works for Joy-Cons and even the classic N64 controller, so you do you.
Honestly, I love this whole messy, nostalgic trip. Makes me wonder what else they’re cooking up.
