Oh wow, so here we are, diving into the wild world of VR documentaries. So, Red Bull and Jonathan Griffith Productions have teamed up — as if that’s a surprise with Red Bull always pushing limits, right? Anyway, they dropped this thing called “Touching the Sky” on Quest. It’s like a front-row seat to some daredevil antics with wingsuit base jumpers in the European Alps and a paragliding squad soaring across the Himalayas in Pakistan. An hour of this madness. Why not, right?
They used these whacky custom 3D, 360 cameras — because normal cameras just wouldn’t cut it. There’s Fred Fugen and Vincent Cotte, who are like, your acting tour guides in wingsuits, doing crazy flights in the Italian Dolomites. Fred was saying something about it being super tricky to manage the freefall part of it all. I guess flying with a big ol’ camera isn’t exactly in the base jumping manual. There were drone pilots in helicopters too; sounds like an air circus to me. A sight to remember, even though they barely trained together. What could go wrong? (I wonder with a slight laugh.)
Plus, they have Aaron Durogati and Matthias Weger giving paragliding a go in the Pakistani Himalayas. Can you even imagine? Those mountains are no joke. Aaron mentioned how flying out there is intense because… well, those mountains aren’t small potatoes. The thermals are their own beast. A hiccup out there and you’re solo, no rescue helicopters swooping in like in the movies. Back in the Alps, they’d have backup — but here? Nope.
Oh, and get this! You can catch this documentary trip for free on Meta Quest TV, but it’s only for Quest 2 and the newer gizmos. So like, if you’re rocking the OG Quest, tough luck buddy.
And if your curiosity’s been sparked on how the heck they managed to record all this, Red Bull tossed out a behind-the-scenes video. Thirty minutes of raw, unpolished footage showing the chaos and skill behind the camera. Talk about bonus content, right?
So much for living vicariously — or maybe getting cold feet? Who’s to say.
