Okay, so here’s my take on this whole Tempest Rising multiplayer thing. Grab a coffee or something because this might wander a bit.
Tempest Rising, right? So, they kind of nail this throwback Command & Conquer vibe, but let’s be real, it’s more like a thin slice of a pie rather than the whole gooey masterpiece. Two factions, nine maps—yeah, that’s it. Custom options feel, well, a bit like an old, dusty toolbox with just a few rusty gadgets. Everything’s like “minimum viable product” written all over, y’know? Add in that it’s mainly a C&C remix, and I’m like, “Eh, what’s new here?” Maybe they’ll toss more stuff in later, like when the Veti crew arrives. Who knows when that’ll be though? At this point, it feels like building a car with just half the parts.
Unit balance? Forget it. Anything about that will change faster than my mood on a Monday morning. People love the GDF—those drone swarms are a hit—but give it a week, and some genius will probably flip that strategy on its head. I can almost see it now—someone figures out a counter move, and suddenly the unbeatable becomes, well, beatable. Classic.
Let’s leave the strategic stuff to the real experts. They’re busy crafting killer moves while I’m busy… well, getting distracted by Dynasty’s Scrap Trucks. Love those things! Pop a repair turret down, build structures—it’s like Lego but cooler. And who doesn’t get a kick out of transforming Trebuchet tanks? Seriously, it’s all about micromanagement and showing off your slick moves.
Now, I’ve got this C&C flashback thing going. Tempest Rising’s like slipping on a pair of old comfy sneakers, good for one last run. Like, remember the engineer-rush trick? It’s still alive and kicking here. Snatch the enemy’s base while they gaze at some infantry show. Ah, the troll’s life.
There’s this Doctrine tech tree, too. It’s tricky. Do you splurge on upgrades? Sure, 15% more health for your troops sounds fab if you’ve got an army. But most of my matches are over in a flash. So, nah—haven’t stacked enough Tempest credits yet. But no doubt, if you grind it out, there’s more fun buried there somewhere.
If you’re a hardcore competition nut looking for RTS thrills, hmm, temper your excitement. Right now, it’s mostly 1v1 stuff, and if you’re dreaming of 2v2 showdowns, there’s a promise flying around that it’s in the works. Patience, grasshopper. Three maps for team matches isn’t exactly paradise. And oh, still waiting on that Veti expansion. It’s like waiting for your toast to pop up—feels like forever.
The maps available? They’re okay. A bit samey, really. Symmetrical layouts, bottlenecks, a few points to capture. Nothing to write home about. You want fireworks? Look elsewhere. It’s standard stuff, no jaw-droppers here. Tempest Rising doesn’t really ask you to pick quality over quantity but leaves you wondering if quantity was ever on the table.
